A day in the life of Viscri

The sun rises at 6.43 a.m. and like a clock, cows and horses are released from their stables, clips that cut out of their barns and in the center, engraved road leading out of the village. Everyone turns left, and slowly they reach the meadows filled with dew that shine in the early morning, ready for their day chewing the groom in the sun. This vision perfectly sums up the relaxed lifestyle at Viscri, or "Deutsch Weisskirch" – a traditional and picturesque Saxon village in Brasov county, about 50 kilometers from Sighisoara.

The carted horse plows the town, transporting goods and products to the villagers, while others carry handfuls of tourists who need time to explore this picturesque part of Romania. Tourists climb the hills, through the green forests to look for blacksmiths and all those traditions that make Brasov look like a country that time forgot.

Descending back to the village we see the ladies who knit and sell handmade socks, hats and ceramics. One of the oldest churches in Transylvania is located here, it was built in the 13th century and creates a perfect picture. Its tower offers a stunning panoramic view of the vast meadows, worth a walk.

Lunch, salads, soups, cheeses, bread, meats ... and of course Horinca, the local plum cognac. All the food, except for the oil and sugar, they are produced by the village... and you can definitely try them. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to one of the lesser known and slightly smaller settlements of Prince Charles, “it was restored while maintaining the traditional characteristics of Transylvania and certainly does not diminish the rural lifestyle of the farmers in this village which remains culturally unique, it looks like the industrial revolution and communism passed them by...

The Mihai Eminescu Trust has over 300 projects in the area to rescue and restore many of the traditional buildings from the 1999, hoping to encourage foreigners to move to a simpler way of life, and it looks tempting! Wandering around the city, waving to the locals and peeking into the gardens whets our appetite for another fantastic organic dinner.

And on 19.50 the evening, again like clockwork, as the sun sets on another idyllic day, cows and horses make their way behind the gravel, this time some stop at the central water boat, like having a last minute chat of the day. Until the next morning when they meet again on the gravel leading to the meadows in the sun.
